The real rule

Why the Swiss laugh, and what it means if you're new here.

In the canton of Zurich, the dog course is not a hobby: it is part of the dog law that has applied since June 2025. The course trains the owner as much as the dog. As a newcomer with a dog, also plan for the microchip, the AMICUS registration and the yearly dog tax at your Gemeinde.

The moving to Switzerland checklist

Blüemli's verdict: Ding. Six lessons. Since June 2025: 6 lessons within a year of getting a dog.

HUNDEKURS: literally: “dog course”; really: school for the dog, and for you Ueli's Word

Be like Ueli. Register the dog. Pay the tax. Pack the lunch.

The rule, explained

The Canton of Zurich explains it on its page about dogs: new dog legislation has been in force since 1 June 2025. The practical training comprises at least 6 lessons, completed within 12 months of getting the dog. First-time owners, or people who have not had a dog for ten years, also take a theory course with an exam. Every dog is microchipped and registered with AMICUS, and the commune charges a yearly dog tax. According to the canton's press release of March 2025, the practical training was cut from 14 to 6 lessons. So the puppy goes to school, and so does the owner.
