In German-speaking Switzerland people speak Swiss German but write Standard German, and the two sound very different. The rule, explained

The Federal Department of Foreign Affairs calls it the characteristic feature of German-speaking Switzerland: a big difference between the spoken language, Swiss German, and the written language, Standard German. So a newcomer with good German can read every sign, letter and newspaper, then fail to follow the conversation at the bus stop. The classic test word is Chuchichäschtli, little kitchen cupboard, in Standard German Küchenschränkchen. It is a shibboleth: the “ch” gives you away. Listen a lot, ask people to switch when you need it, and say it slowly.
