Why do Swiss police patrol quiet streets in winter?

Because break-ins tend to rise once winter time begins and dusk comes early. The Canton of Zurich says the police strengthen their patrols in this season, even where nothing seems to happen. If you see something suspicious, call 117, the police emergency number.

The real rule

Why the Swiss laugh, and what it means if you're new here.

When the clocks go back in late October, it gets dark around five, and Swiss police warn that break-ins tend to rise in the dark months. That is why patrols get more frequent, even in quiet streets where nothing seems to happen. The police ask residents to leave a light on or on a timer, to lock doors and windows, and to call 117 when something looks wrong; that call is never a bother. Many police forces also offer free advice on securing your home.

Be like Ueli. Light on. Door shut. Wave at the police.

The rule, explained

The Canton of Zurich explained the season in a media release of 3 November 2025, Bei Verdacht Telefon 117: Gemeinsam gegen Einbruch. With the start of winter time, the number of break-ins tends to rise. Burglars use the darker days and the early dusk. The police strengthen their patrols and increase their checks, which is why a quiet dead end can see a patrol car more often than usual. Residents are asked to call 117 when they see something suspicious, and free security advice is offered. 117 is the Swiss police emergency number, as ch.ch lists it. The advice for residents is short: a light on, or on a timer, doors and windows locked. So the patrol in Ueli's street is not news. It is the plan.
